Editorial Meh
Strange Journey is a short, experimental visual novel built around an unconventional mechanic: instead of traditional dialogue trees, progression hinges on leaving comments on in-game social-media posts. The premise—a couple forced into financial desperation, considering exposure work—has narrative potential, and players who understand the system report finding meaningful branching tied to comment choices. However, the execution is severely hampered by poor onboarding and a critical mismatch between marketing and content. The preview images prominently feature a woman who is not the wife, a choice that has sparked repeated accusations of bait-and-switch; the actual protagonist is a blonde police officer with a different aesthetic. The UI is opaque—many players cannot figure out how to interact with it (comments don't register, button functions are unclear), and those who do find only a 5–10 minute experience. The build feels like an early proof-of-concept rather than a playable demo. Genuine interest in the concept is drowned out by frustration with the presentation and unclear design.
