Editorial Meh
Shroud is a post-apocalyptic narrative game with combat and relationship mechanics that ambitiously blends story, crafting, and tactical puzzle-solving. The creative vision is clear and compelling—players praise the unique atmosphere and world-building—but recent updates have exposed serious friction between design ambitions and execution. Combat is grindy and opaque (card-based, requiring save-scumming); progression gates are poorly signaled (killing a specific enemy in sewers, finding bullets scattered without clear direction), leading to dead-ends and restart requirements; dialogue quality fluctuates noticeably, especially in the main story arcs; and companion AI feels disconnected from the narrative stakes (allies refuse to help with high-stakes fights, undercutting emotional investment). The developer is responsive to feedback and actively fixing mechanical oversights, but the current build punishes exploration and guesswork more than it rewards discovery. For players patient with rough systems and willing to consult guides, there's a game worth engaging with; for most, frustration will outweigh atmosphere.
