Editorial Meh
Overlewd is a gacha-RPG with turn-based battles clearly inspired by Darkest Dungeon, set in a harem dark-fantasy world. The near-universal praise goes to the art and character design, which even harsh critics grudgingly acknowledge as strong, and the adult scenes earn decent marks for quality. The strategic 3v3 combat has its fans too. What drags the experience down, however, is a wall of systemic issues: an extremely slow battle pace with no speed-up, a near-absent tutorial, and — most critically — an aggressive live-service monetisation model with staggering prices, stamina gates, and FOMO mechanics that many players consider predatory rather than merely expensive. Characters are also criticised for having samey skills that make auto-battle ineffective. The consensus is that the underlying game concept is genuinely appealing, but the live-service wrapper makes it hard to recommend. On the technical side, the picture is grim. Server connection errors and a recurring Runtime Exception crash on early missions are reported across multiple reviews in different languages, suggesting these are widespread and persistent. Constant server round-trips slow down even basic interactions. One player notes using a self-written bot for 95% of their 379 hours just to farm event content — which speaks to how the design loop functions in practice. This is an online-only title with real stability problems; expect interruptions.
