Editorial Meh
HellThing is a text-heavy visual novel spin-off set in the same dark, mystical universe as the developer's prior titles (Whorebastards, DickRaiser, JUGSaw), this time casting the player as a male protagonist whose descent into necromancy is already foreshadowed by earlier entries in the series. The writing and characterisation draw genuine praise from those who read it in its intended language, and the Hellsing-inspired atmosphere earns some enthusiastic recognition; the developer themselves considers it their best work. That said, the most substantive criticism is structural: because the protagonist's fate is pre-determined by the larger continuity, choices feel low-stakes and the corruption arc that drove previous games loses its tension. Adult content is sparser than players of the series expect, and the long passages of narrative prose don't fully compensate for the reduced interactivity. Community response is modest overall — few reviews, limited engagement — so the enthusiasm that does exist comes mostly from existing fans of the developer's catalogue. If you enjoyed the world-building of the companion titles and want more story set in that universe, HellThing delivers competent, earnest dark fiction with some memorable set pieces. If you're coming in cold or primarily seeking adult content, the payoff may feel thin relative to the word count.
