Heartsteel is a rough early-access project with genuine creative ambition but significant execution problems. The core concept—a dark-elf companion and the choices around her—shows promise, and the developer is visibly engaged with feedback. However, the game suffers from game-breaking bugs (characters stuck on screen, time progression breaking after certain interactions), poor quest design (players cannot find required items without external guides), and a time-advance system that makes exploration feel rushed rather than immersive. Most recent reports suggest some bugs have been patched, but the underlying design issues remain: the opening lacks context for why the companion matters, quest hints are insufficient, and the pacing collapses when walking alone advances a full day. For a very early build, the bones are there, but it needs substantial work on clarity, pacing, and stability before it's ready for a wider audience.
