Editorial Has potential
Clavis Kinkygate is a visual novel (roughly 90% story, 10% boss-rush combat) set in a Lovecraft-inspired colonial horror setting, with decent writing, voice acting, and static CGs. The core appeal—dark atmosphere, character work, and adult content—lands well for its niche audience, and at ~$13 USD, players who enjoy narrative-heavy adult games find it a solid value. However, the build is actively hostile to replay: no manual saves, no text skip on subsequent playthroughs, and multiple endings locked behind replaying the entire game from the start. Combat controls are unmappable (Z/C/X/Space in non-standard layout), making fights feel clunky even though boss patterns are learnable. Several players note AI-generated art in backgrounds that clashes with hand-drawn character sprites, and the static H-scenes, while well-voiced, lack animation. Taken together—missing saves, unskippable dialogue, locked endings—these aren't minor polish issues; they actively prevent players from engaging with the game's own content. For a 3–4 hour game marketed partly on multiple endings, this is a significant design failure.
