Carnal Instinct is an adult ARPG that commits genuinely to both halves of its premise: a real open-world game with combat, exploration, and quests, layered with extensive sexual content and character customization. The world has atmosphere—Egyptian-inspired desert ruins, decent dungeons, and fluid parkour—and reviewers praise the visual polish, character models, and the freedom to customize genitalia, body type, and sexual expressions without rigid gender constraints. Sex scenes vary by NPC type (humanoid, furry, monstrous) and unlock through exploration and "sex XP," which feels integrated rather than tacked-on. But the game is fighting itself. The combat is stiff and unresponsive—attacks can't be canceled, stamina management is tedious, and low-level enemies feel as threatening as high-level ones due to flat XP scaling. Quest design is routine (fetch, kill, solve simple puzzles); the world feels half-empty despite its size; weapon variety is minimal; and armor is mostly recolors. Most critically, the recent engine reboot to UE5 has left the game in limbo: content from the older UE4 version hasn't been ported over, romance options sit unfinished for years, crafting and potion-making are placeholder, and bugs are frequent enough that players report save corruption, quest locks, and keybinding failures. Reviewers who bought during early access feel abandoned. For a finished release, this would be "rough"; for an ongoing early-access project that's been in development over five years, it reads as stuck in revision hell—pretty but slowly delivering on its promises.
